Increasing air pollution allows less and less sunlight to reach the earth's surface, creating a "global dimming" effect that disturbs rainfall patterns and creates severe droughts. In an even more alarming twist, there is concern that recent success in solving the dimming problem is accelerating global warming, melting ice caps and flooding coastal cities. NOVA examines this baffling climate conundrum and considers the disturbing implications for our planet's future. 10:00 *Global Voices “Discovering Dominga” – This program chronicles the journey of a young Iowa housewife who discovers she is a survivor of a massacre of Maya Indian villagers. By 1968 the celebration of free love, music and an alternative lifestyle had descended into a maelstrom of drug abuse, broken dreams and occasional violence. Through interviews with a broad range of individuals who lived through the summer of love -- police officers walking the beat, teenage runaways who left home without looking back, non-hippie residents who resented the invasion of their community and scholars who still have difficulty interpreting the phenomenon -- this AMERICAN EXPERIENCE offers a complex portrait of the notorious event that many consider the peak of the 1960s counter-culture movement. 9:00 USS Wisconsin: The Last Battleship (Special) 9:30 *The War of the World “The Icebox” – In the final episode Ferguson shows how the Cold War was not a time of peace – but a continuation of the war of the world in which millions died in proxy wars. To capture a vivid, first-person account of the new realities of war in Iraq, director Deborah Scranton (The War Tapes) created “a virtual embed” with the platoon, supplying cameras to the soldiers so they could record and tell the story of their war. At the time, no one had conducted studies in the wild of these enigmatic creatures, and many thought it couldn't be done. Since then, he has spent more time with dolphins than any other human, developing unique insights into what goes on in their sophisticated societies. This is the story of his personal journey into the world of dolphins, the sometimes dangerous waters into which they have led him and his continuing crusade to protect them. 9:00 Nova “Kings of Camouflage” – Cuttlefish are one of the strangest animals on our planet. These shape-shifting creatures can hypnotize their prey, impersonate the opposite sex and even kill with lightning fast speed. More accomplished masters of disguise than any chameleon, they have an incredible ability to morph their skin color – even their shape -- to blend into almost any background. They have the largest brain-to-body ratio of all the invertebrates. But are they capable of learning and remembering complex tasks? With beautiful underwater footage and in-depth expert interviews, NOVA gets up-close and personal with these bizarre and amazing animals. 10:00 *Global Voices “Love Inventory” – Israeli filmmaker David Fisher inspires his four siblings to begin an emotionally challenging search for their long-lost sister. He became the first American killed by U.S. military forces on native soil since the 1970 Kent State shootings. Against the breathtaking backdrop of magnificent mountains and seacoasts, the film attempts to unravel at least part of the enigma. 9:00 Nova “The Ghost in Your Genes” – In a provocative report from the frontiers of biology, NOVA explores new findings that call into question the long-held belief that all inherited traits are passed on by our genes. Their expectations of peace and quiet are quickly dashed when they discover a poison-pen writer is at large in the village. Fortunately, Miss Marple happens to be in town and is ready to unravel the mystery. In addition to Fox (“Henry VIII,” “Rebecca”) and D’Arcy (Master and Commander), the cast includes film director Ken Russell ("The Devils," "Women in Love") and John Sessions (“The Lost Prince,” "The Merchant of Venice"). (Part 1) 10:30 P.O.V. “The Last Conquistador” – Renowned sculptor John Houser has a dream: to build the world's tallest bronze equestrian statue for the city of El Paso, Texas. He envisions a stunning monument to the Spanish conquistador Juan de Oñate that will pay tribute to the contributions Hispanic people made to building the American West. But as the project nears completion, troubles arise. Native Americans are outraged – they remember Oñate as the man who brought genocide to their land and sold their children into slavery. As El Paso splits along lines of race and class, the artist must face the moral implications of his work. 11:30 Fannie Lou Hamer (Special) (30 minutes) Friday 29 6:00AM Sesame Street 7:00 Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood 7:30 WordWorld 8:00 Curious George 8:30 Clifford the Big Red Dog 9:00 Super Why! 9:30 Dragon Tales 10:00 Barney & Friends 10:30 Between the Lions 11:00 Caillou 11:30 Reading Rainbow 12:00PM The Victory Garden 12:30 The Woodwright’s Shop 1:00 Made in Spain 1:30 Landscapes Through Time with David Dunlop 2:00 For Her Information 2:30 Sesame Street (repeat) 3:30 Arthur 4:00 Jakers! Rana Singh Sodhi, the brother of America's first post-9/11 hate crime murder victim, suddenly finds himself in a world in which patriotism is quickly morphing into jingoism, racial profiling and hate. The film explores post-9/11 America from his perspective, telling a personal story of national tragedy, murder, community and the American Dream. 8:00 Click & Clack’s As the Wrench Turns “Outsourcing” – Taking note of the growing trend of outsourced American labor, and bored with doing their radio show themselves, Click and Clack decide to outsource themselves. A subsequent trip to India brings them in contact with a world that actually allows them to do what they’ve long dreamed of — absolutely nothing. But trouble ensues when their on-air Indian counterparts, Rajiv and Sanjiv, the Gupta Brothers, display such accurate automotive problem-solving genius that their radio show becomes more popular than ever. As a result, new business in their shop is more than they can handle, and their industrious producer Beth feels personally pre-empted by the flawlessly running outsourced radio show. To restore sanity and preserve their idle pursuits, Click and Clack realize they must somehow sabotage their outsourced operation. 8:30 Remembered Earth: New Mexico’s High Desert (Special) 9:00 Documenting the Face of America – Tells the inspirational “behind the lens” stories from some of the most celebrated photographers in history. Narrated by Julian Bond, the program highlights the forgotten collective pieces of our past. This story celebrates the courage and vision of legendary photographers and artists such as Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Gordon Parks, Marion Post Wolcott, Russell Lee and others who worked with the U.S. government under the unorthodox leadership of Roy Stryker from 1935 to 1943. Together they changed the course of photography, but more important, changed history, as Americans saw what life was like across the nation for the first time —- from North to South, from East to West, for rich and poor and for black and white. (Special) 10:00 American Horizons: The Photographs of Art Sinsabaugh – Art Sinsabaugh's Midwest landscapes, photographed in the 1960s, were unprecedented in both subject matter and format. He used a gigantic 12 x 20 inch "banquet" camera to capture panoramic photographs of rural and suburban spaces not normally treated as traditional "landscapes," and his large-format photographs were sometimes only 1" tall but 35" wide. Although admired by scholars, photographers and curators as an important innovator, Sinsabaugh's fame has been limited, partially because he often produced only a few prints of each photograph. For this reason his mounted exhibition prints are extremely rare. This program is as much about what an artist sees, as it is about seeing the artist. (Special) 10:30 Venture North 11:00 Out of Left Field: The Making of the Chinese Olympic Baseball Team – A former major league baseball manager, Jim Lefebvre, and Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame pitcher Bruce Hurst take on the toughest task of their careers -- transforming China's fledgling national baseball team into a contender in the 2008 Olympic games. This is a story of two divergent nations united by America's pastime, a seat-of-the-pants chronicle of underdogs, world-class dreams, high-stakes risks and Olympic glory.
